Faenza Icons by tiheum Faenza Icons by tiheum
This icon theme for Gnome provides monochromatic icons for panels, toolbars and buttons and colourful squared icons for devices, applications, folder, files and Gnome menu items. Four themes are included to fit with light or dark themes/panels.

This work is released under the GNU/GPL license. Sources can be downloaded here : [link]

INSTALLATION:
Download the tar.gz file and extract it. In the new folder created, run the ./INSTALL script to choose the distribution logo (Ubuntu, by default) and the Gnome menu icon. If run as root, the script will copy the iconsets to /usr/share/icons to made them available to all users. Some default icons used by Rhythmbox and Dockmanager may be also replaced.
Run ./UNINSTALL as root to restore defaults icons.

Faenza icon theme is available to install for Ubuntu users via a PPA repository. View the README file for instructions and a list of known issues.

As the file is the too big for DA submission policy, you can download the archive form the dedicated Google Code page: [link]

TIPS:
  • Ubuntu 11.10: the Unity panel has a strange behavior with some icons compared with the previous version (and Gnome 2 panels of course), especially with user menu and battery state icons. You might use one of the to new themes instead of the classic ones: Faenza-Ambiance is suitable with dark panel and toolbars (inherits Faenza-Darkest theme), Faenza-Radiance with light panel and controls (inherits Faenza theme).

  • Some applications are configured to always use the same icon regardless of the selected theme. To display the Faenza icon, edit as root the /usr/share/applications/application_name.desktop file and locate the line beginning with 'Icon='. Replace the fullpath icon name by the one of the Faenza icon (usually, it's the name of the application itself) without the extension.
    Don't forget to make a backup before changing one of those files.
    E.g. Vim desktop file is /usr/share/applications/gvim.desktop
    Some desktop files can be located in /usr/local/share/applications or in your ~/.local/share/applications folder (e.g. Steam desktop file is somewhere in ~/.local/share/applications/wine).
    Here is a partial list: emacs23, gcolor2, bluefish, hardinfo, setroubleshoot, gufw, pithos, vim, rssowl, netbeans, gazpacho, guake, all commercial games, etc

  • If you want to use the new Gnome contact application, edit its desktop file (/usr/share/applications/gnome-contacts.desktop) to use the specific (and beautiful) icon named gnome-contacts ;)

Love the icons. Just one question. How come the Pidgin icon isn't scalable? It shows up all distorted on my home screen. Thanks.

This is hands-down the best icon theme I've seen for any OS, let alone for Gnome. I can't thank you enough for giving me the elegant, bright desktop I've always wanted!

One request--a monochrome indicator icon for Getting Things Gnome (likewise for Dropbox, Kupfer, and Artha, although they're not as crucial).

Thanks again!

Outstanding. Absolutely among the best. I agree with another commenter that this should be the default icon set. Thank you for making available.

A few of your icons I especially enjoy: Pitivi, FireFox, Evolution (though I don't care much for the software), Preferences, and so many more I'm still discovering.

And thank you for taking icon requests. I might request:
GnoTime, GnuCash, Adobe Flex ([link]),
Nx Client, Audacity, DeVeDe

Thank you again.

Very nice and professional theme :clap: Thanks a lot for sharing!

Have a little trouble though with the installation script. I run it just to be able to choose the distro icon. And when I press either 'U' or 'u' for Ubuntu the scripts aborts itself and the icons folder doesn't appear in ~/.icons (I run the script as user). I solved it manually on my desktop but I failed on fixing the script :| After I altered this line:
[Uu]* ) iconname="distributor-logo-ubuntu";;

adding extension at the end ..
[Uu]* ) iconname="distributor-logo-ubuntu.svg";;

.. the script can run further (it asks whether to replace existing icons folder or not) but when it finished the distro logo doesn't change. Maybe svg icons, although included in your theme, are not allowed in panels (but they should be supported in Gnome 2.30, no ?) or .. something else. Dunno :(

Hello,
I'm just cooking a little instruction for you. BTW I have found out why the script didn't work for me and how to fix it. I'll put that in next post as well. Just give me some time ..

OK,
First of all I didn't touch the start-here.* icons. Here is how I did it:

- I assume that you have the Faenza* directories already placed in ~/.icons/

- you'll basically need to do one similar change in each subfolder in ../Faenza/places/

- so let's navigate first to ~/.icons/Faenza/places/scalable. You can see there a file called distributor-logo.svg and a couple of others called distributor-logo-'distribution-name'.svg. The first one is not actually svg file (despite the extension) but just a symbolic link pointing to one of the other files (the real svg's.)

- to set Ubuntu logo in your panel, you need to point the symbolic link to distributor-logo-ubuntu.svg, for fedora it will be distributor-logo-fedora.svg, etc. Just delete the old symlink and create a new one poiting the logo you want. Note that in the ../scalable folder the symbolic link has to be named distributor-logo.svg

- then you need to repeat similar thing in the other directories for different sizes (../places/16, .../22, etc.) with the exception that in these ones you point symbolic link distributor-logo.png to file distributor-logo-xxx.png

Below is a list of commands you can run in terminal to set Ubuntu logo for all sizes. You'll be better off doing it in the first way: just copy all lines under All commands in one go and paste into terminal and you will make all changes at once. The 'split' version is just to make it more readable so you could see how this works.

All commands in one go:
cd ~/.icons/Faenza/places/scalable/ && ln -sf ./distributor-logo-ubuntu.svg distributor-logo.svg && cd ../48 && ln -sf ./distributor-logo-ubuntu.png distributor-logo.png && cd ../32 && ln -sf ./distributor-logo-ubuntu.png distributor-logo.png && cd ../24 && ln -sf ./distributor-logo-ubuntu.png distributor-logo.png && cd ../22 && ln -sf ./distributor-logo-ubuntu.png distributor-logo.png && cd ../16 && ln -sf ./distributor-logo-ubuntu.png distributor-logo.png

Split version
cd ~/.icons/Faenza/places/scalable/ && ln -sf ./distributor-logo-ubuntu.svg distributor-logo.svg
cd ../48 && ln -sf ./distributor-logo-ubuntu.png distributor-logo.png
cd ../32 && ln -sf ./distributor-logo-ubuntu.png distributor-logo.png
cd ../24 && ln -sf ./distributor-logo-ubuntu.png distributor-logo.png
cd ../22 && ln -sf ./distributor-logo-ubuntu.png distributor-logo.png
cd ../16 && ln -sf ./distributor-logo-ubuntu.png distributor-logo.png

------------
Once you've done the above you may need to log out and back in to see the new logo. Note that this should also work for the various types of menu icons in Avant Window Navigor (it works for me), not sure about any other docks.

Any problems just give me a shout.

I will refer to the issues with the script in a new thread. It's too much posts in here already ..

That didn't work, I solved it by deleting all images called start-here and renamed the symbolic links to start-here.svg and start-here.png

If not the best, this is at least in the top 3 icon themes for Gnome right now, and this in only because there are still missing icons. I don't see myself switching to anything else once this is finished. Awesome work!
