Faenza Icons by tiheum Faenza Icons by tiheum
This icon theme for Gnome provides monochromatic icons for panels, toolbars and buttons and colourful squared icons for devices, applications, folder, files and Gnome menu items. Four themes are included to fit with light or dark themes/panels.

This work is released under the GNU/GPL license. Sources can be downloaded here : [link]

INSTALLATION:
Download the tar.gz file and extract it. In the new folder created, run the ./INSTALL script to choose the distribution logo (Ubuntu, by default) and the Gnome menu icon. If run as root, the script will copy the iconsets to /usr/share/icons to made them available to all users. Some default icons used by Rhythmbox and Dockmanager may be also replaced.
Run ./UNINSTALL as root to restore defaults icons.

Faenza icon theme is available to install for Ubuntu users via a PPA repository. View the README file for instructions and a list of known issues.

As the file is the too big for DA submission policy, you can download the archive form the dedicated Google Code page: [link]

TIPS:
  • Ubuntu 11.10: the Unity panel has a strange behavior with some icons compared with the previous version (and Gnome 2 panels of course), especially with user menu and battery state icons. You might use one of the to new themes instead of the classic ones: Faenza-Ambiance is suitable with dark panel and toolbars (inherits Faenza-Darkest theme), Faenza-Radiance with light panel and controls (inherits Faenza theme).

  • Some applications are configured to always use the same icon regardless of the selected theme. To display the Faenza icon, edit as root the /usr/share/applications/application_name.desktop file and locate the line beginning with 'Icon='. Replace the fullpath icon name by the one of the Faenza icon (usually, it's the name of the application itself) without the extension.
Don't forget to make a backup before changing one of those files.
E.g. Vim desktop file is /usr/share/applications/gvim.desktop
Some desktop files can be located in /usr/local/share/applications or in your ~/.local/share/applications folder (e.g. Steam desktop file is somewhere in ~/.local/share/applications/wine).
Here is a partial list: emacs23, gcolor2, bluefish, hardinfo, setroubleshoot, gufw, pithos, vim, rssowl, netbeans, gazpacho, guake, all commercial games, etc

  • If you want to use the new Gnome contact application, edit its desktop file (/usr/share/applications/gnome-contacts.desktop) to use the specific (and beautiful) icon named gnome-contacts ;)

Hello, Just wanted to post 2 apps that don't have icons. But perhaps you already know :-P

Noise (Music player for ElementaryOS)
Xiphos (Bible reading app, uses Sword project files)

I think almost all the Elementary OS apps don't have counter parts in Faenza. But mainly cause they are still under development. But for some reason when changing to Faenza set. It removed the stock icon and replaced it with the Gear wheel for executable. Only one that did that so far though.

Still a beautiful set. God Bless you and your art!

Sorry, wanted to clarify that it was the Noise music app that was replaced with the gear.

This is the only icon theme I use on Linux now :)
Well, except when using KDE.

For future, I'd like to see an icon for ClipGrab.

He would have to create a whole new icon theme, since most apps (at least the default ones) on Macs aren't available on Linux (Safari, Finder, iWork, Final Cut Pro, Garage Band etc.). There isn't really any similar ones either...

The only option is to throw that junk out the window and buy a proper PC.

awesome work dear developer!!!just a small request, how can I set mono icons for dropbox?cuz the mono icons are used only when I apply faience-claire set but reverts to the sore blue icon when I try to apply faience-azure and faience-ocre while the rest of the panel icons are in the mono fashion.

:icontiheum:
tiheum Featured By Owner Dec 10, 2012
This theme aims to be used with Gnome-Shell, so the notification icons (like dropbox) are colorful. Faience-Claire is a special set for Unity and it provide mono icons for indicators and orange/aubergine stuff to fit the Ubuntu style.
If you want to use the mono icons, you can copy the 'status' folder from Faience-Claire to the Faience-Azur folder, for example. This solution is provided without any guarantee ;)

hi tiheum,

love your work, keep it up. i would like to use the firefox-original icon in the faenza apps folder (the one with the eye). is there a way to make it load firefox-original.png? i guess renaming would work, but maybe there is a more elegant way?

thanks in advance

:icontiheum:
tiheum Featured By Owner Nov 11, 2012
There is a more elegant way:
- Copy the Firefox desktop file (/usr/share/applications/firefox.desktop) in ~/.local/share/applications/
- Replace the icon name used by Firefox in the copied file by firefox-original
